I noticed in the end of 2016 that I wasn't using too much of my sketchbook (or even drawing regularly). So last week I created a new sketchbook for my self with two things in my mind - make myself draw one page per week and test a new possible product (sketchbook or notebook) for Nuts for Paper.
Hoje estou a partilhar a primeira página.

Today I'm sharing the first page. I don't know if I will be sharing all the pages. There is always something I don't want to share (because they either didn't work or it's a secret).
The hot air balloon is related with "Chubby Adventures" and the sparrows with a illustration I want to do very soon.

This is what a sketchbook is for, try new things. As usual I will also share some tecnhical things about the sketchbook and the material I used to draw.
Spiral bound Sketchbook. Hardcover made with Cardboard. Inside white paper sheets with 160gr. This sketchbook has 56 sheets (one for each week of the year, plus a few more).
The pencils are the Prismacolor Col-Erase in Light Blue, Tuscan Red and Lavender. (they are erasable colourful pencils).

After I felt that during last year that I draw and develop my drawing skills a lot, I wanted to challenge myself.
And the the challenge will create a comic with stories about a squirrel. It will be called "Chubby Adventures". I don't know yet how many times I will be able to share this project, but hopefully it will be a regular thing.
In the photo you can see the drawing of the first page. Without the lettering or colour, yet.
I'm working on colour studies and already thinking in the next pages.
What's your thoughts on this challenge?

I didn't do a favourites drawing for December, but one that gathered many things I loved/liked during the year. All the details about it here.

In December I decided to redo some old illustrations.

This one of a deer. (details in the link)

And this one of a snowman.

Materiais usados:

The last monthly favourites illustration I did (after this one I switch up things a bit).

Succulents and Butterflies Illustration
more about it here

One of my favourite illustrations of 2016, inspired by the work of J. R. R. Tolkien
“In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort.” - in The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien
All about this illustration here.

R. R. Tolkien

I've been with this idea in my head for almost three weeks. And when I decided to dedicate a full week to the books of Tolkien I knew that I wanted to draw something related with Lord of the Rings. And it had to be home, or my take on a hobbit hole.

I started it last night. I had the intentions to colour it today, with daylight, so I could record the process. But I got carried away and started to work with the liquid masking film, and then the Ecolines (liquid watercolour). At first I tried to keep the colours very light (has I always do) but I also end up with very colourful and bright colours.
I hadn't used Ecolines for a long time (a few years to be more exact) and I miss them a lot.

Ecolines are brand of liquid watercolour, that dries really fast and can be dilute in water and mixed together. I used water brush pens (which are brushes with a water deposit) to lay the colours. I didn't the colours to be pure, so I diluted them in water.

But even before using the ecolines I used the Liquid Masking Film to block out some areas while I lay the basic colours. (a quick note about using liquid masking film - the one I have can only be applied with a brush. With this one I only use cheap brushes, because with time the masking fluid will ruin the brush.)

Copic Multiliner SP 0.25, White Gel Pen, HB Pencil, Copic Ciao Markers in E43, YG91, RV29, R22, B12, B23, BV04, YG03. Colour Pallet

I used the Copic markers for some details like the flowers, the bird, berries and the pillow. For the rocks I wanted to have some grey colour, but instead of picking a straight grey I choose YG91 - that is a mix of yellowish green with the name of Putty and I think it work very well for the rocks because it blends better.

This is my take on a Hobbit hole, or one that I wouldn't mind living in. It would be on wood, because I would be a modest Hobbit (not a very rich one). Painted in yellow because it would be joyfull and cosy space.
